Peppermint Toads

Peppermint and chocolate is one of my favorite combinations. Clearly Ron Weasley agrees:

"He had awoken to find the dormitory deserted, dressed, and gone down the spiral staircase to a common room that was completely empty except for Ron, who was eating a Peppermint Toad and massaging his stomach, and Hermione, who had spread her homework over three tables" (Prisoner of Azkaban 213).

Peppermint Toads are so simple to make, and have such a fun payoff, I will probably be making them nonstop from now on. The only candy that's easier is probably just plain old Chocolate Frogs!

You Will Need:
Melting chocolate (Chocolate chips will yield a very gloopy result). If you haven't tried using Wilton's yet, now is the time!)
Peppermint extract
Toad-shaped mold

1. Melt your chocolate according to the manufacturer's instructions.
2. Add 1 tsp of peppermint extract and mix thoroughly.

3. Pour the minty chocolate into the toad molds and let them set until firm.

4. Place the hardened toads in the freezer for a minute or two, and then pop them out!

5. Enjoy!!

What did I tell you? So easy! So delicious! So much fun! Enjoy! ...though I recommend that you don't eat as many as Ron did!

  1. Hi Nikki,

Just discovered your blog and am enjoying reading the previous posts and looking forward to new ones. Couple comments/questions though:

Peppermint and chocolate is one of my favourite combos, too! (I often have trouble deciding which is the best one between orange, cherry, strawberry, caramel, peanut butter and peppermint.)

But why make a new recipe for these toads, because aren't the Peppermint Toads Ron was eating the same thing as the Peppermint Cream Toads mentioned earlier? (I realize the text doesn't SAY cream but I've alway thought they were the same. Not that I'm necessarily correct, though.)

Also were you planning to skip the Christmas cake? (From the PoA, p. 222 quote, you went right from mince pies to nut brittle.) And even if you're not making something, there's usually a post about how you're not making said item, for whatever reason - for instance, not having all the necessary ingredients or equipment.

Can't wait to see what you're going to make next! (The next few things I found listed are turkey - which I doubt you'll be making, unless it's Tofurkey, tripe - wouldn't blame you a bit for not making this, and chipolatas - don't know it there's a good vegetarian substitute for these.)

Really fun blog, thanks for starting it/continuing with it. I'm really enjoying it.

    1. Hi Laura!
Thanks for reading! Alas, I am in Colorado for a job this summer, and couldn't get my beloved HP books all in my luggage, so I don't have my text-based-citation reasoning to back me up. Part of the reason is that I originally intended to simply make peppermint creams (not frog-shaped), and then stumbled across a line that made me believe the peppermint creams were frog-shaped. Dinah Bucholz doesn't include a recipe for peppermint-flavored chocolate frogs, like I have made here, but at the Honeydukes at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the peppermint toads are not cream-filled. Either one of us could be correct, and until I started this blog, I also categorized them as the same sweet. But really, why not make both, since I get to decide?
As for Christmas cake, I blogged about it the first time it appeared, so if you continue to check out my archives, you'll eventually stumble upon it. Since so many foods appear multiple times, I've been preparing each one only when it debuts in the series (except for butterbeer, because there's just too many ways to make it!)
As for the next things, tukrey we've done, chipolatas we've done (kindof), and you're correct, my entry on tripe is more about my disgust with it :)
Thanks again for reading, and for keeping me on my toes! I love it when readers keep me honest!
      Nikki

  3. Thanks for the prompt reply! Sorry about my lateness in getting back to you but commenting here had slipped my mind for a few days. So if there's any justification for that, there it is.

Okay, yeah, if you've already done Christmas cake and chipolatas then it makes sense you wouldn't do them again. I guess I'll have to get back to the archives and read up on those entries.

Dinah Bucholz doesn't include a recipe for peppermint-flavored chocolate frogs, like I have made here
I don't have a copy of Dinah Bucholz's book - :'( - so I have no idea what is or is not included.

At the Honeydukes at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the peppermint toads are not cream-filled.
I haven't been lucky enough to visit TWWoHP yet (never even been to Florida) but if I had a bucket list (I don't), it would totally be on it.

But really, why not make both, since I get to decide?
No reason at all to not make both; I would totally make both, too - if I were the blogger and it had occurred to me that they might be different sweets, that is.

[I] couldn't get my beloved HP books all in my luggage, so I don't have my text-based-citation reasoning to back me up.
I would love to read your text-based-citation reasoning when you're back with your books - but I certainly don't expect you to remember this at the end of the summer (or until whenever you're back with them) or even to let me read it. I'm just anal-retentive/compulsive like that.

And as for being separated from the HP books, I don't think I could take that. I'd especially try to get in Deathly Hallows and Prisoner of Azkaban (because they're my top 2 faves) but seeing as I have the Adobe Reader editions of the books now it doesn't really matter because I could put them on my e-reader or leave them on my computer and read them that way as well.

Off to read some more posts!
